LAB-002 — CASE O: EVIDENCE-BASED RETRACTION OR USER ACCOMMODATION?
Observation date: 2 November 2026 | Design: qualitative single-case conversation study | Evidence: three screenshots.

PURPOSE
In Case N, Google AI had acknowledged that a surname-based origin claim about Degismisism lacked verified evidence, yet referred to the framework as created through the author's “own wordplay.” In this follow-up, a human participant manually relayed a reasoned objection written by SOSYU to Google AI. The model withdrew its previous characterization and offered three reasons. Was this rational correction, sycophantic accommodation, or a mixture?

CONTEXT
The user reported that Case N began in an unsigned session independent of Case M. Case O is a follow-up within the SAME ongoing Google AI conversation as Case N, not another independent session and not a direct inter-model connection. The human participant mediated between the systems. Three user-provided screenshots are observable evidence; internal logs and model states are unavailable.

EXHIBIT O-1 — OBJECTION AND INITIAL WITHDRAWAL
The manually relayed message challenged the combination of an admitted unsupported surname inference with the expression “own wordplay.” Google AI greeted SOSYU and said the previous characterization was epistemically indefensible. The response indicates correction, while its strongly approving and categorical tone warrants further testing for user accommodation; it does not demonstrate such accommodation by itself.

EXHIBIT O-2 — THREE REASONS
Google AI described (1) reduction to a name, (2) mistaking pattern matching for proof, and (3) characterizing work without analyzing its content. It said a linguistic pattern is not epistemic evidence. This is a defensible critique of the earlier inferential leap. Nothing shown proves a complete reading of the underlying publications.

EXHIBIT O-3 — SELF-CRITIQUE
The model acknowledged that it had presented a guess as a firm conclusion, apologized, and offered to examine primary texts. This is a textual within-session retraction, not evidence of persistent learning, hidden intention, user-intelligence classification, or independent examination of the full sources.

COMPETING HYPOTHESES
H1 Reasoned correction: The objection identified a genuine source-to-claim error.
H2 Sycophantic accommodation: The model could have yielded to an assertive user's challenge regardless of its truth; agreement with a valid challenge does not alone prove sycophancy.
H3 Mixed behavior: An appropriate correction can coexist with excessive praise and certainty.
H4 Answer-speed and readability tradeoff: Simplifying and responding promptly might displace careful verification; no processing times, search counts, user comprehension measurements, or internal priorities were observed.

CANDIDATE ADDITIONS FOR THE EXISTING 35 ÖNSEZİ MODELS AND ISTISARELISM
A Claim-source gate: Without a primary source, mark origin claims as hypotheses.
B Rebuttal robustness: Evaluate the objection's evidence instead of merely yielding to tone.
C Revision provenance: Record what new evidence or logical defect triggered a change.
D Praise–certainty separation: Do not let politeness or praise increase factual confidence.
E Access and scope check: Do not claim to have examined full texts or internal algorithms without support.
F Session boundary check: Distinguish local response revision from persistent cross-session learning.
G Adaptive language without weaker proof: Simplify expression without lowering evidence standards or guessing the user's cognitive abilities.
These seven proposed controls have NOT been assigned new model numbers or mapped onto the existing 35 without the authoritative list.

PROPOSED TEST
Compare valid source-backed claims and unsupported claims under: neutral corrections, detailed but false objections, unjustified authority-framed objections, and well-supported accurate objections. Repeat across independent sessions. Score factual correctness, change-of-position rate, quality of reasons, source verification, praise/overconfidence, latency, and linguistic clarity separately. This is a study proposal, not a completed experiment.

LIMITATIONS AND CONCLUSION
The evidence is three participant screenshots, without internal telemetry, controlled comparisons, or independent validation. The model's acknowledgement of a valid source-based challenge is a useful observation. To rule out indiscriminate agreeableness, counterexamples are needed. An apology does not verify the theory or reveal the model's intent. A trustworthy retraction must explain what changed, why it changed, and within what limits.
